Modern interiors are engineered down to the lumen. Colour temperature shifts through the day, and acoustics are modelled before a wall is built. Scent has mostly been left out of that conversation.
When people describe a space they love, they rarely describe the furniture first. They describe how it felt to walk in. That feeling is made of many layers working together, and each one can be designed.
Scent is the layer that has stayed the least precise. It has lived in the world of candles and plug-ins: pleasant, but hard to repeat and easy to overdo.
Treating scent as a specification
Designing atmosphere means treating scent like the other environmental layers: chosen deliberately, delivered at a known intensity, and adjusted as the day changes. Restraint is usually the right default.
Calm is not the absence of intent. It is intent that has stopped announcing itself.
The goal is not a room that smells strongly of something. It is a room that feels finished.
